Eternal owl

Cornelia Rémi's Harry Potter Bibliography (the place to look for people interested in more or less scholarly texts on Harry Potter) has been updated once again (this time on 2010-04-10).

In times when my (quasi only) visits to the potterverse result from my reading PoA to our daughter: Viola Owlfeather continues with heroic virtue to collect accademic potteriana.
And her collection shows that scholarly potterism is still very much alive: if I counted correctly there are some 20 items from 2010 on Cornelia Rémi's list, including this one, which I just pre-ordered:
Bassham, Gregory/Baggett, David (eds.) [forthcoming]: The Ultimate Harry Potter and Philosophy. Blackwell, 2010 (The Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture Series 20). Contents:

* Bassham, Gregory: "A Hogwarts Education: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly."
* Bassham, Gregory: "Choices vs. Abilities: Dumbledore on Self-Understanding."
* Baggett, David: "Love Potion #9 3/4: The Fall and Redemption of Merope."
* Baggett, David/Granger, John/Bassham, Gregory: "Just in Your Head? J.K. Rowling on Separating Reality from Illusion."
* Kind, Amy L.: "A Pensieve for Your Thoughts? Harry Potter and the Magic of Memory."
* Williams, David Lay/Kellner, Alan J.: "Dumbledore, Plato, and the Lust for Power."

Looks like a really good book! :) I'm intrigued by the chapter on Merope and her so-called Redemption. I'd be interested in how they came to the conclusion that she was redeemed since she died rather than take care of her child. Plus she never told her family or Tom Riddle's family about Tom, and his life at the Orphanage just wasn't that great - obviously. Dumping him there isn't exactly redemption, but maybe they feel that just staying alive to give birth was her salvation?

Edit: Perhaps she did tell the father, Tom, but I don't think he believed her. I'll have to check my book on that one.

I think that he probably did know she was pregnant. From something Dumbledore said, I think when Riddle Sr. Told people he was hood winked they thought Merope pretended she was pregnant so that Tom would marry her.

Dumbledore thought she stopped giving him the love potion after she was pregnant thinking the child would make him stay.
